Why Early Hi-Fi Rush Bosses Thrash You (And How To Shatter Track 3 & 4)

I went into Tango Gameworks' stealth drop, Hi-Fi Rush, expecting a breezy, colorful throwback to Dreamcast-era action platformers. What I actually found in the early campaign was a brutal rhythm-action test disguised as a Saturday morning cartoon. If you want a deep dive on how critics scored this sleeper hit, check out the IGN Hi-Fi Rush Review for a complete rundown.

The game hits a massive skill wall early on. The opening tracks let you button-mash your way through fodder, but by the time you reach Track 3 (Trial By Volcanic Fire) and Track 4 (Less Budget, More Problems), the game strips away your training wheels. Enemies start wearing heavy Z-Shields, elite fire-breathing units crowd the floor, and boss encounters punish off-beat panic dodging. I died more times in Zanzo’s R&D department than I care to admit.

Here is my complete tactical playbook to clean up these mid-early campaign spikes, avoid the dumbest mechanical traps, and build an unstoppable setup that shreds boss health bars.

Track 3 & 4 Mission Walkthrough

Track 3: Trial By Volcanic Fire

Your primary objective here is surviving R&D Department 1 while hunting down Zanzo. The environment itself is your worst enemy in this level. Lava hazard pits and falling magma platforming sequences force you to keep time even while jumping.

  • The Volcanic Arena Fights: When lava jets fire up, do not stop your combo chain. Dash on the beat to gain invincible frames (i-frames) over thermal vents.
  • The Fire-Breathing Enforcers: Focus down the red heavy-type bots first. They spew fire across the floor that disrupts your grounded light strings. Call Peppermint in off-cooldown to strip their stun meters from mid-air.
  • Boss Fight - Zanzo’s Budget Minions: You do not fight Zanzo directly in a traditional duel here; he spends his entire budget testing lava traps and sending elite waves. Keep your camera angled upward to track dropping lava bombs, and always parry the final strike of the heavy robot combos to trigger an instant counter-finish.
       [ Track 3 Objective: Navigate R&D Volcanic Core ]
                               |
            +------------------+------------------+

[ Lava Jet Platforming ] [ Elite Fire Bots ]
Jump & Dash on 4/4 Beat Peppermint Stun Intercept

Track 4: Less Budget, More Problems

This level introduces the infamous AR testing rooms and Z-Shielded enemies. Your core objective is infiltrating Zanzo’s main office to cut off his funding.

  • The AR Room Traps: You enter virtual reality arenas with strict fight gimmicks. The biggest trap is the room filled with shielding bots. If you hit a shield with standard light attacks, Chai recoils, breaking your beat streak and leaving you open to a flank.
  • Overcoming Z-Shielding: The second a blue bar appears over an enemy health meter, call in Peppermint. Her gun instantly shreds energy shields. If you do not have her summoned, do not attempt a melee string. Dodge away and wait for her assist cooldown to reset.
  • The Golden Beetle Encounter: Before reaching Zanzo’s inner office, you face elite shield-bearers paired with fast-moving flying drones. Jump into the air, grapple the flying drone with your magnet link, destroy it in the air, then drop down on the shield bearer with Macaron’s heavy call-in.

4 Rookie Mistakes Tanking Your Rank

  • 🎯 Button-mashing off the beat: Stringing together light attacks frantically lowers your damage output by up to 50% and ruins your score rank. If you lose the tempo, stop swinging, listen to the background track, and restart your light string on the next beat pulse.
  • 🎯 Ignoring the Parry mechanic: Dodging is safe, but Parrying is mandatory. When elite bots flash a lightning bolt icon, they are launching an unblockable beat-synergy sequence. Match their rhythm visually or audibly to deal massive break damage.
  • 🎯 Forgetting Partner Assists in mid-air combo strings: Most players only call Peppermint or Macaron while grounded. Summoning Peppermint mid-air suspends Chai in the sky, letting you extend your aerial combo and avoid ground hazards entirely.
  • 🎯 Hoarding Reverb Gauges: Saving your Special Attacks for "the right moment" is a massive mistake. Reverb builds fast if you hit beat markers. Spend your gauge to clear out dense mobs instantly rather than dying with a full meter.

The "Campaign Breaker" Partner Jam Build

If you are struggling on Hard or Very Hard during these chapters, drop the stylish multi-button combos and focus on a high-damage assist rotation setup. This build trivializes elite shield units and keeps Chai invulnerable for half the fight.

CHIP SLOT 2 : Battery Drop Rate Increase
CHIP SLOT 3 : Health Pick-up Efficiency

CORE COMBAT LOOP:
Magnet Grapple -> Light Punch -> Call Peppermint -> Heavy Ground Slam
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

How to Run It:

  1. The Engagement: Open every fight with a Magnet Pull to the highest-threat enemy.
  2. The Shield Strip: Immediately tap the Peppermint Call button. Her laser burst strips blue Z-Shields in under two seconds.
  3. The Stun Locking: Follow up with a standard Light-Light-Light-Heavy rhythm string. On the final Heavy hit, tap the Partner Assist button again to launch a Partner Jam. This triggers a huge explosion, dropping battery packs and high-tier gear.
  4. The Loop: The Battery Drop Chip recharges your Special Attack gauge continuously. Use Guitar Leap whenever you are surrounded to gain instant i-frames and clear the floor.

Final Expert Tip

Turn on the Rhythm Visualizer UI in the sound settings (press select/back on your controller). It puts a glowing beat bar at the bottom of your screen. When the chaos of explosions, particle effects, and robot parts hides your visual cues, ignore the middle of the screen and time your button presses strictly to that bottom bar indicator. It completely changes how you play.
