1. Introduction & Campaign Scope

When I first stepped into the shoes of Death in Darksiders II, I expected a pure hack-and-slash power fantasy. What I actually hit was a wall of intricate puzzle-dungeons and brutal boss arenas in the Forge Lands. Many players bounce hard off this section of the campaign. The jump from straightforward combat to complex water-routing mechanics and massive, multi-phase boss encounters catches unrefined builds off guard.

The campaign stalls out hard during three key sequences: navigating the puzzle-heavy depths of the Drenchfort, clearing the vertical hazards inside The Nook, and surviving the screen-filling clash against The Guardian. These missions demand tight platforming, precise lock-on management, and intelligent skill allocation. If you mash buttons without a plan, you will burn through health potions in minutes. I put this campaign guide together to make sure you clear these hurdles on your first try without breaking a sweat.

2. Mission Walkthrough & Official Objectives

Objective 1: Restore the Flow in The Drenchfort

Your goal here is simple: reactivate the water channels to forge the Maker's Key. Execution, however, requires patience with rolling orb puzzles and hive-spawn clear speed.

  1. Clear the Entry Gate: Drop down into the main courtyard and wipe out the initial Construct Warriors. Grab the explosive shadowbomb and clear the yellow crystals to unblock the main door.
  2.
  3. Retrieve the Eastern Orb: Head down the east corridor. You will hit a puzzle room requiring two blue orbs. Grab the first bomb plant, hurl it at the suspended orb, and shoot it to drop the sphere. Roll it into the socket to lower the gates.
  4.
  5. The Skeleton Key Retrieval: Navigate through the open eastern aqueduct. You need to jump into the empty water channel to locate the chest containing the Skeleton Key. Do not overlook this bottom canal; missing this key forces painful backtracking.
  6.
  7. Boss Encounter - Karkinos: Once both channels flow, you fight the giant beetle Karkinos. Dodging his direct charge is easy, but his underground root tracking catches players off balance. Wait for his charge, dodge to the side so he hits the wall, then hit the fallen egg with a heavy attack to shoot it right back into his stomach.

Objective 2: Traverse The Nook & Retrieve the Heart Stone

The Nook serves as a vertical gauntlet filled with wall-runs, lift puzzles, and sudden ambush arenas.

  1. Lift Puzzle Navigation: After entering the lower levels, locate the circular platform. Use Death Grip on the wall hooks to swing across the gap toward the central switch.
  2.
  3. Dual Soul Splitter Logic (or Double Switch Handling): Activate the levers in sequence. Wall-run across the left side, plant yourself on the pressure plate, then shoot the shadowbomb affixed to the rolling orb to blast it into its socket before the gate timer runs out.
  4.
  5. The Bheithir Ambush: On the lower bridge, you will face the fiery dragon-like mini-boss Bheithir. Dodge under its dive attacks and attack its exposed back.

  THE GUARDIAN FIGHT: PHASE FLOW

PHASE 1: Stone Hammer & Shadowbomb Detonation
  - Ride Despair in wide circles.
  - Bait the heavy hammer strike into the dirt.
  - Shoot yellow Shadowbombs on arm with pistol.
  - Death Grip onto exposed Heart Stone & slash.

                         |
                         v

PHASE 2: Rolling Cannon Bombs & Mid-Air Grip
  - Stay mounted; lock onto the homing bomb.
  - Shoot bomb until it halts and floats.
  - Bait boss into walking over the floating bomb.
  - Climb arm wooden beam -> Death Grip to Heart!

Objective 3: Defeat The Guardian

This massive boss fight requires riding your horse, Despair, while managing target locks.

  • Phase 1: Stay mounted on Despair and circle the boss at medium range. When he lifts his massive hammer, burst dash outward. The moment the hammer sticks in the ground, draw your pistol (Redemption) and shoot the cluster of yellow Shadowbombs on his arm. The explosion forces him to kneel. Dismount immediately, target the exposed heart fragment, and use Death Grip to launch yourself onto it for a massive attack string.
  •
  • Phase 2: The Guardian switches to launching giant homing explosive balls. Do not panic. Lock onto the incoming projectile while riding Despair and shoot it continuously. Once damaged enough, the bomb stops, hovers, and pulses. Ride behind the Guardian's legs. The floating bomb will fly toward you, hit the Guardian's body instead, and knock him down. Run up his arm beams, jump into the air, and Death Grip to his final headstone to finish the fight.

3. Major Rookie Mistakes

I see new players make the same fatal errors in these chapters. Avoid these three habits to save yourself time and frustration:

  • Ignoring Dodge Off-Set Cancels: Mashing light scythe attacks locks you into long animations. When an enemy telegraphs an attack, hit your dodge button instantly to cancel your swing recovery.
  •
  • Neglecting Wrath Skill Synergies: Relying solely on basic physical swings causes boss fights to drag out. You need active Wrath skills running at all times to clear small mobs and keep your health topped off.
  •
  • Selling Possessed Weapons Mindlessly: Possessed Weapons (the rare red-tier drops) can be upgraded by sacrificing unwanted gear to them. Feeding green gear with health-on-hit attributes into a Possessed Weapon permanently passes those stats to your main weapon. Never sell these to merchants for gold!

4. The "Campaign Breaker" Build

When players ask me how to break the mid-game wide open, I always hand them this setup. This hybrid Necromancer build offers near-infinite sustain, auto-tracking damage, and total safety during hard encounters.

THE "PERPETUAL DECAY" HARBINGER / NECRO HYBRID

            PRIMARY: Exhume (Max Level)
            - Summons 3 Ghoul Distractions

                            |
                            v

            SECONDARY: Unstoppable
            - Massive Strength & Crit Buff

                            |
                            v

            GEAR PRIORITY:
            1. Health on Hit / Health Steal
            2. Wrath on Hit
            3. Critical Hit Chance

Core Skill Allocation

  • Exhume (Necromancer Tree): Max this out immediately. Summoning three ghouls pulls boss aggression completely away from Death.
  •
  • Undying Fury (Passive): Enhances ghoul duration and damage.
  •
  • Unstoppable (Harbinger Tree): Provides a massive burst to physical strength and critical hit chance while your ghouls draw enemy fire.

Weapon Stat Priorities

  • Primary Scythes: Look for Health on Hit and Wrath on Hit.
  •
  • Secondary Heavy Weapon (Hammer or Axe): Prioritize Critical Damage and Strength.

How It Plays

Summon your ghouls at the start of any encounter. While enemies focus on your summons, activate Unstoppable and move behind the target. Execute a basic Scythe-to-Heavy cross-over combo.Light -> Light -> Heavy). Every hit restores both Health and Wrath. By the time your ghouls expire, your Wrath meter is full, letting you instantly recast Exhume. You will never run out of health or energy again.

5. Final Expert Tip

When facing high-mobility bosses or fast swarms, do not hold down the lock-on button constantly. Lock-on fixes your camera angle and restricts your dash direction to rigid orbits around a single enemy. Practice dropping your target lock right after landing a combo so you can camera-steer your dodge roll in any direction. Master this camera decoupling tactic, and no boss in the Forge Lands will trap you in a corner again.
